The Argentina’s Primera Division was founded in 1931 and it is currently being run by the Argentina Football Association (AFA). There are currently 20 professional football clubs. It is the second country to establish a professional football league after the English Premiership League.

River plate is the most successful professional football club in Argentina. It has won a total of 38 titles in all championship, including the Intercontinental cup, Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana.

Apart from River plate football club, other popular football clubs in Argentina includes; Independiente football club, Boca Juniors, and colon. River Plate football club, which is also known as club Atletico River Plate, was established in 1901, even before the Argentina football Association was formed. This club has some historical background that makes it unique- The name of the club was formerly Rio de la Plata which is a river that passes through Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina. The founder of the club was found to be playing football at the bank of the river, hence its name was derived. It has remain the best football club in Argentina till date and it has been rated six times as the best club in the world according to FIFA club rankings. This club has also produced some world best players, including the greatest footballer of all time Diego Maradona who played for the club and at one time coached the club.

Boca Juniors football club is another successful club in Argentina’s league. It was founded in 1905 and has won 18 international titles till date. This club is situated in La Boca, a location in the capital city of Buenos Aires. Its main rival on the Argentina professional league is River plate.

Club Independiente is next to River Plate and Boca Juniors in terms of popularity and success. This clubs was founded in 1905 and was named El rojo which means the Reds. Club Independente has won a total of 15 international titles, including 7 copa Libertadores trophies. Some of Argentine’s most popular players have also featured for the club.

Argentina Football League is similar to the Brazilian league in so many ways. The economies of these two countries are quite improving just like a typical South American country, hence Football players in the two countries are paid similar salaries and wages. These salaries and wages can however not be compared with higher salaries players get in European leagues.
